Brexit – British residents in Portugal are to replace residency document after 21st January

British residents in Portugal to replace residency document after the end of the transition period.

Find out the guidelines for the expected procedures provided by SEF.

As previewed in the Withdrawl agreement, British residents in Portugal are to replace residency document – temporary residency certificate – after the end of the transition period

SEF recently provided guidelines informing that all British Citizens residing in Portugal will be requested to replace their temporary residency certificates with other documents.

This will be done as follows:

  • SEF will ask British residents to complete an online pre-registration form that will identify them, and their family members, as residents under the Withdrawal Agreement.
  • A dedicated platform is being prepared for this purpose.
  • SEF will contact British citizens, holders of a temporary residency permit in Portugal, after January 1st
  • SEF will only contact those who are registered as residents in Portugal.

So it is imperative that such registration occurs by the 31st of December.

In a joint effort, SEF and the British Consulate are once again asking British residents to register at the City Hall.
